Football at The Beeches, Brislington

We are excited to share with you a fantastic opportunity for your learners to join an Alternative Provision Offer with us here at MIAG. This offer will provide them with the opportunity to develop and accredit football knowledge and skills through a range of challenges.

ASDAN is an education charity and awarding organisation that provides courses, accredited curriculum programmes and regulated qualifications. The programmes are designed to engage learners in relevant and motivating courses that elevate them to progress to further education, training and work and empowers them to take control of their lives.

Here at MIAG we offer the Football ASDAN programme and this is delivered by two ex-professional footballers.

Any learner aged 11 – 18 can participate in this course. Learners do not have to hold an Education, Health, Care Plan (EHCP). The learners could be young people who are disaffected with traditional learning and curriculum, on the verge of PEX, or simply have a passion for football. Such a course may just support their future educational pathway or reignite a passion for learning.

As part of the ASDAN short course, the learners will undertake up to 60 hours of learning that will encompass:

  • Functional Skills in Maths & English
  • Health, fitness, and nutrition
  • Researching the history of football
  • Football in the community.
  • Coaching and Officiating
  • The environment
  • Working in football
  • Access volunteering at Goals- Health and Safety checks
  • First Aid & Safeguarding course
  • FA Playmaker Course
  • Social Networking E-Safety
  • Football participation

Our football programmes are delivered by two ex-professional footballers Mike Howard and Barry Hayles.

Mike Howard – Mike is a Football Association ‘C’ Licence holder. Mike started his career at Liverpool before signing for Tranmere Rovers, Morecombe Town and enjoyed 6 seasons at Swansea City before moving to Oxford United.

In his early career with Liverpool, his consistent performance at left-back saw Mike be awarded the Junior Red of the Year award. Mike ended his career playing regularly in the Welsh league, even playing in the Europa League.

Barry Hayles – Barry began his career playing non-league football before turning professional where he enjoyed a remarkable career playing for Stevenage Borough, Bristol Rovers, Fulham, Sheffield United, Millwall, Plymouth Argyle, Leicester City, and Cheltenham Town before returning to the non-league scene. Barry was a prolific striker scoring some 261 goals across his career. After being called into England’s ‘C’ squad twice Barry was also capped at an international level on ten occasions by his County Jamaica.

Both Mike and Barry continue to share a passion for Football and see how the ‘beautiful game’ can support young people to re-engage with learning through the medium of sport.

We are continually improving our offer and have links with the Professional Footballers Association (PFA); the JE3 Foundation and many other associated partners.
